ISBN

An International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is required for the identification of each dissertation. The number is printed on the back cover and on the back of the title page. ISBNs are used, for instance, in the acquisition of publications, and in bibliographies, databases and library systems.

All versions of an electronic dissertation (printed, PDF, HTML) receive an individual ISBN. All ISBNs that are needed should be requested at the same time.

All three ISBNs should be mentioned in both the printed and the electronic versions. After the actual ISBN, one should, using parentheses, express what version the ISBN signifies: (pbk.) after the print version ISBN, (HTML) after the electronic version published in HTML format, and (PDF) after the electronic version published in PDF format. It is also recommended that the E-thesis Internet address, http://ethesis.helsinki.fi/, is mentioned.

One may acquire ISBNs by contacting the Helsinki University Library. For more information, see the Helsinki University Library website.
