Timetable

The dissertation manuscript must be on display for public viewing for ten days prior to the dissertation examination. Even if the dissertation is published electronically, the version to be displayed must be printed.

When making plans for the date of the dissertation examination and the printing timetable, time should be reserved for at least the following tasks:

  • Compilation of the manuscript and materials
  • Page layout and cover design
  • Web versions produced by the University Press
  • Printing
  • Cover proofreading
  • Dummy copy proofreading
  • Possible corrections to the dummy copy
  • Public display (10 days)

University of Helsinki dissertation candidates may publish their dissertation either in printed form or electronically on the Internet.

The University Senate has decided that dissertation candidates who publish their dissertation electronically must provide a total of at least 30 printed copies of the full manuscript to the following University units:

  • 4 copies to the University central administration
  • 6 copies to the Helsinki University Library under the Finnish Legal Deposit Act
  • 20 copies to the dissertation candidate’s faculty (the faculty is entitled to require a maximum of 40 copies)
In addition, copies will be needed for the dissertation candidate’s own use.

Dissertation candidates who publish their dissertation only in printed form must provide a total of at least 160 copies of the full manuscript to the following University units:

  • 10 copies to the University central administration (summarising parts in case of so-called article dissertations)
  • 100 copies to the Helsinki University Library for dissertation exchange
  • 50 copies to the dissertation candidate’s faculty
